The Massarella family have been farming in the Midlands for 130 years - Initially with a few acres of rented land within Leicester City limits close to Abbey Lane, to the first farm at Hugglescote, rented in the 1930’s for 30 shillings (£1.50p) an acre per annum ! The Hugglescote Farm, Bardon Grange was eventually purchased and is now headquarters to the purpose built Louella Stud - the Horse sector. Today, the Massarella’s own and mix farm over 1,200 acres in Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Louella Studs Hall Farm, Hilltop Farm and Charley Mill comprise one of the single largest grassland farms within a ring in Leicestershire and on them are a 650 strong flock of commercial breeding sheep. The highly popular Masham Mules form the majority of the ewes and these are run with top quality, pedigree, Louella bred, Texel terminal sire’s. The pedigree Texel flock, now numbering over 150 animals, has been steadily built up over the last few years and has earned a reputation for consistently outstanding stock, achieving top prices at breeding sheep special sales. Superb Shearling Rams, ready to work, are usually for sale at competitive prices from August onwards. A select few, pedigree Texel females will be marketed at the same time. The stock can be viewed by appointment on the farms. Please enjoy the photos of the farm animals which are an inherent part of the Massarella’s daily life - Here too you can see pictures of the 2010 Charley Mill Charity Shoot, now the largest event of it’s kind in the Midlands which has raised over £135,000 in the last 5 years for children’s Charities, namely Rainbows Childrens Hospice and CHECT the Children’s Eye Cancer Trust.

Additionally a 50 strong, traditional English Long Horn Cattle Herd is maintained on these holding’s. The ‘first string’ senior cows are run with Top Class Bulls of the breed and young stock is occasionally for sale. The remainder are run with our own Beef Bull’s, our newest addition being the Charolais purchased from Billy Turner & daughter of Skelton on Ure, North Yorkshire. The Turner’s are noted to have some of the finest stock of the breed and Billy was most pleased to assist Michael Massarella and his nephew James Watkins (Farms Manager) when introducing Charolais’. The first pedigree heifers have been purchased and Louella look forward to producing some quality calves in 2011 to build the herd.
